Your Local Austin, Texas Summer Fun Activity Kit 2021

1. Welcome to Austin, Texas: Summer 2021

Austin Texas activity in summer 2021

Sweater season is here! And no, I don’t mean that cozy part of mid-fall when we get to snuggle into cozy cardigans and oversized hoodies – oh no. I mean it’s that time of year where the Texas sun seems to scorch the earth from within and we get the pleasure of a daily detox through the copious expelling of sweat. We all become… sweaters.

2. Don’t let the heat bully you into missing out: try these fun Austin, TX activities

As more and more people flock to Texas from all over the world, we feel the distinct responsibility to prepare and equip y’all for the intense heat of a Texas summer that can sneak up on even those who were born and raised here! Newcomers move here in June, ready to renovate with some exterior painting, while old-timers are looking to update their homes to sell, but no one wants to work in this brutal heat.

We don’t think you should have to delay prepping your house for sale or put off making your new house feel like home. That’s why we at That 1 Painter are here to offer our full services all year round. We’re accustomed to working in all types of conditions, so you can leave everything to us while you get out and explore your city.

Thriving while exploring during a Texas summer is truly an art form, but you don’t have to be an expert in beating the heat in order to survive. Here’s a list of supplies that will make your summer just as enjoyable as our cool springtime.

  • Sunglasses You’d think we wouldn’t have to list this, but some of us always forget them (*ahem* me)! Be better than me. Remember protective eyewear.
  • Sun hat Not only does a sun hat provide more protection and cooling assistance than you’d think, but hats are also coming back into style. Go bucket hat, fisherman’s hat, or sun hat and you’ll fit right in.
  • Sun shirt Some people need extra protection because of sensitivities to the sun, in which case we’d recommend something like Mountain Hardwear shirts for women or Patagonia Hoodie for men.
  • Cooling vest Some of us really struggle to keep cool but invest in a cooling vest and you’ll be outside all summer! Thermapparel’s UnderCool is a good one.

5. Hydration is a key component to a successful Austin summer

  • Water Bottle Look, I know everyone carries them and it can seem like a hipster trend, but please don’t talk yourself out of staying hydrated just because you’re a unique and undefinable ultra-cool hooman! Get you a refillable water bottle and drink water to reach premium energy levels.
  • Electrolyte drops To up your hydration game, help replenish your electrolytes without ingesting artificial, sugary bevies by adding these amazing drops to your water. We recommend getting the 2-piece, so you can carry the small dropper bottle with you while you adventure. You only need about 7 drops per 8 ounces of water and if utilized properly, these minerals can help stave off the kind of summer dehydration that sneaks up on you.
  • Misting fan Even if you’re sitting in the shade, enjoying people watching or reading a good book, the heat likes to invade your personal space. You might be surprised how much a small misting of water and a light breeze can cool you down! Hit it with a spritz and fan every once in a while or grab one of these handy dandy portable neck fans, before the heat creeps over you, to maintain a heat-exhaustion-less life.

6. Save money and pack supplies for Austin, Texas activity

  • Backpack Carry your misting fan, sunscreen, and more in a handy dandy, lightweight backpack.
  • Cooler/Lunch Bag If you’re off to the river or a park for the day, you’re going to want some tasty snacks and treats as sustenance, but if you don’t keep them in a cooler or lunch box, they will slowly roast in your backpack.
  • Summer snacks We could talk snacks all day, but for now, we’ll leave you with these fresh summer favorites:

lunch

dill-seasoned chicken salad with chopped walnuts, on sliced cucumber

picnic charcuterie: summer sausage & prosciutto, broccoli & bell peppers olives & pickles, gouda & havarti + crackers

in-season fruit

berries
cherries
peaches
plums
nectarines
watermelon
frozen green grapes

sweets

oreos (stay with me… they’re strangely good when warmed by the Texas sun)

green apples, nut butter & honey

you packed lunch, go treat yourself to some Amy’s ice cream!

7. Get around and do Austin, Texas activity

  • Water shoes Grab you some chacos or even some cheap Walmart water shoes to protect your feet from rocky river beds or just to keep you cool from the toes up, all day!
  • Paddleboard or Kayak These are fun and popular ways to spend time near Austin waters. Rent a paddleboard or kayak from somewhere like the Austin Rowing Club or make the investment to get one of your own. Summer is long and fall is beautiful for getting out on the water; you may want to make this a regular thing!
  • Tubes There are few activities better for making memories than tubing in Austin’s Barton Creek Greenbelt, the San Marcos River (about 50 miles away), or the Comal River (also about 50 miles away). It is so relaxing to allow the motion of the river to bring people together and let them drift apart in a beautiful dance. You can usually rent tubes on location and get picked up and dropped off back where you parked. Bring cans of sparkling water or beer (if the location allows), sit back, and relax.

  • Hammock This is one of our favorite ways to relax in Austin. Grabbing a hammock and a bug net from a local outdoor gear shop and taking your hammock to a nice shaded spot near or over the water will lead to relaxation galore.
  • Bike Instead of walking, feel the breeze on a bike around the city! Austin is one of the most bike-friendly cities in North America, so familiarize yourself with the laws and join the bike lane to get around quicker and cooler.

8. We’ll see you out there!

Austin is one of the most fun places to hang out, no matter what time of year! So don’t let the sun beat you by keeping you indoors all summer. Take any or all of our suggestions, get out there, and keep Austin weird! We’ll take care of your exterior painting needs, while you enjoy your city.
