Exterior Painting in St. Paul, MN
St. Paul exteriors carry layers of history, from story-and-a-half houses with dormers to grand homes near Mississippi River Boulevard. We start with color and condition, then wash, scrape, repair and prime so each surface is sound before finish coats go on. Your yard stays tidy throughout.
What St. Paul Exterior Painting Includes
Color, condition and careful finish work
- Color Planned on Site: Choosing exterior color from a small chip rarely works on a St. Paul house with a brick chimney, a stone foundation or a dark roof. We brush generous samples on the siding so you can see them morning and evening. Then we map which color goes on the body, trim, sash, porch floor and door before anyone opens a can.
- Dormers and High Gables: Story-and-a-half homes and tall foursquares put dormers, eaves and gable peaks well above the lawn. Those upper surfaces take the brunt of sun and wind, yet they are easy to skip. We set ladders securely, protect shingles where equipment rests, and give dormer cheeks, window trim and fascia the same scraping and priming as the front steps.
- Doors, Shutters and Steps: Small elements often decide how a house looks from the sidewalk. We refinish front doors, take shutters down to paint them when they come off cleanly, and coat porch floors and wood steps with a floor-rated enamel. Railings and balusters are hand-sanded so the finish wraps every edge instead of bridging the gaps between parts.
Exterior Painting Made for St. Paul Houses
Built around older, varied housing
- Heritage District Homes: St. Paul has several designated heritage preservation districts, including Irvine Park and Historic Hill. Some exterior changes there, such as replacing original trim or windows, may need city review, so we suggest confirming requirements before altering details. Our approach favors repair over replacement, keeping original wood whenever it can still hold paint.
- River Bluff Exposure: Houses along Mississippi River Boulevard and the bluffs above the river catch more wind and weather than homes a few blocks inland. Water-facing walls show faded paint and failed caulk first. We look at those elevations closely, reseal joints at windows and trim, and choose topcoats with strong color retention for sides that face the open valley.
- Pre-1978 Paint Layers: Much of the city's housing stock went up long before 1978, and older trim, siding and window sash may contain lead under later coats. We use lead-safe methods whenever we disturb that paint, including ground protection, containment, careful hand scraping and daily debris collection. The goal is a sound surface without spreading old chips into soil or gardens.
