Popcorn Ceiling Removal in Birmingham

Popcorn ceilings turn up in a predictable band of Birmingham houses: ranch homes from the late 60s through the 80s across Vestavia, Hoover, and Homewood; split-levels in Hueytown and Bessemer; and a fair number of early-90s starter homes on the west side. For anything sprayed before roughly 1980, we treat the texture as potentially asbestos-containing until it is tested, and testing is a small, fast, and inexpensive step that we insist on before any scraping begins. That is the responsible order for any house of that age.

The actual removal is a wet-scrape process on almost every ceiling we do, because dry-scraping generates far more dust and rarely leaves a surface flat enough to skim without heavy repair. After the popcorn is off, the ceiling gets a full skim coat, sanded flat, primed, and painted, because a scraped ceiling on its own will show every taped seam and every fastener under Birmingham's low winter sun through the south-facing windows. Homeowners often underestimate how much light a smoothed ceiling puts back into a room, and it is why we usually pair the ceiling with interior repainting and any needed drywall repair on the walls below.
