How to Find the Best Paint Roller on the Market

1. How to Find the Best Paint Roller on the Market

What is the best paint roller cover?

When our founder Steven Montgomery first started painting, he picked up those polyester rollers you can get in a six-pack for dirt cheap. He immediately ditched those when he realized they were just slowing him down and making his job way harder than it needed to be! No one needs those rollers. They don’t hold much paint, they won’t allow you to roll your walls out smoothly, and the nap on them is sparse, so if you’re working with textured walls or are doing some brick painting, it’s going to take forever.

2. What’s the best paint roller available? (Sheepskin)

Sheepskin was the next thing Steven tried. Because they come in an ultra-soft, super thick nap, these reusable rollers will hold a large amount of paint and are easy to roll. The problem with sheepskin is they leave a more noticeable texture behind, which some painters can work around because of their personal rolling technique, while other painters prefer to avoid the hassle. A fifty percent wool blend is another good option for a smooth finish, but with fewer texture challenges.

3. What has no thumbs but is still a fantastic paint roller? This sheepskin!

As good as a sheepskin roller is, nothing compares to the roller of all rollers. We give you: the Purdy Colossus. A chorus of angels is singing behind this one! These user-friendly baddies will make a painter sing, dance, and whistle while he works. The Purdy Colossus is so easy to work with as it holds and lays out a lot of paint, giving you great coverage in a timely manner and leaving you with a super smooth finish. They clean beautifully and are really durable, so you can use them again and again, making them worth the extra bit of coin.

4. Mini rollers that get the job done

Microfiber half-inch mini rollers are perfect for cutting in or accessing those hard-to-reach places, such as corners, around doors, or behind toilets.

Microfiber mini rollers are a reliable tool that carries just enough paint, rolls out easily, and doesn’t leave a lot of texture behind. These are a great little assistant to your big roller.

When it comes to mini rollers, a lot of people think foam covers will give you the smoothest finish, but they just don’t.

They tend to smear, don’t give great coverage, and lay paint unevenly so you have to continuously backroll to even everything out. We are really not fans of the foam roller. Not in the least.

5. The best mini rollers out there

For a sleek finish, Mohair mini rollers are far superior to foam. Despite the fact that they shed the least lint, you should still prepare them using the method we share below. Mohair rollers are best used on anything you want an exceptionally smooth finish, such as doors, trim, and cabinets.

6. Bonus: Professional painter life hack for rolling out smooth surfaces

What is the best paint roller cover?

We’re going to share a technique that professionals use for rolling out smoother surfaces. Prepping your roller. You’ll want to wrap painter’s tape or masking tape completely around your roller, sticky side onto the fibers, then pull it off. Repeat this process two to three times before beginning to paint. What you’re doing here is removing excess, loose fibers so they don’t fall off into your paint and eventually make their way onto the surface you’re painting. This method will help you avoid clumps and chunks of debris being painted onto your walls, cabinets, doors, etc. and allow you to paint quickly and efficiently, so you can move on to the next thing.
